The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
